From: "J S Hoagland" To: "James Hoagland" Subject: Hoagland History Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 09:09:54 -0400 Dear James, I recently visited your web site after being apprised of it by my son another James Hoagland, who currently resides in Seattle. Your site requested info on the derivation of the name Hoagland. I can offer the following. Several libraries along the east coast have a volume entitled "History and Genealogy of the Hoagland Family in America From their First Settlement at New Amsterdam, 1638 to 1891". Most of the data was furnished by Daniel Hooglandt Carpenter. According to that work, there were 3 unrelated males with names similar to Hooglandt who settled in the New York City area between 1638 and 1655. One of these individuals apparently returned to Holland without leaving heirs here. The other 2 are perhaps responsible for genes in most of us males who now bear the name. The book suggests that the name derives from a locality in Holland, which in turn was derived from the word for "hedge". I have also heard that the name was derived from the word for "Highlands". Since my awareness of Holland suggests that "Highlands " are mere dykes, I have always assumed that such a derivation suggested that the ancestors might have come earlier from a more easterly location...Germany ? If you are interested in more details about this book, let me know. I am a retired professor (1985) from the School of Business at SUNY Albany, migrating to this part of New York in 1966, from an earlier life spent mostly in New Jersey. Enjoyed your web site.
